Patient Care Technician Duties and Responsibilities

In order for the PCT to accomplish their primary goal of assisting Nurses in providing health care to patients, Patient Care Technicians (PCT's) perform many tasks. Identified below are a sample of core Patient Care Technician duties and responsibilities.

Measure Vital Signs

Patient Care Technicians (PCT) are responsible for measuring a patients vital signs and monitoring the health of patients they serve. A PCT may take the temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, daily weights and dietary intake of the patients, and collect information about their health and well-being.

Record Keeping

The Patient Care Technician may have the responsibility of accurately recording the information they collect on a patient for inclusion in the medical record. A PCT may promptly report any changes in a patient’s condition to a Registered Nurse or Physician with whom they work with or are assigned to in a clinical setting.

​

Basic Need Assistance

Patient Care Technicians help assist patients with their basic needs, which may include eating, drinking, dressing, bathing and personal hygiene. A PCT may also help in the transport of patients to and from other hospital departments as needed.

​

Patient and Family Education

Patient Care Technicians may help assist Physicians and Nurses in educating the patient and family on the nature of patient care required and therapies being provided. As a result, the Patient Care Technician maintains close communication with Physicians and healthcare team members to understand the patient’s status and needs.
