Congratulations, new CNA grad! You've passed your state exam and you're officially certified. So, what's next? Your CNA certification is more than just a job; it's a launchpad for a rewarding career in healthcare. Here's what you can do now.
Your First Job: Entry-Level Opportunities
The demand for CNAs is high and is projected to continue growing, especially with the aging population. This means you have great job security and a variety of places to start your career.
Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities: This is where most CNAs start. You'll gain hands-on experience providing daily care to a diverse group of residents, from helping with meals and personal hygiene to monitoring vital signs.
Hospitals: Working in a hospital offers a fast-paced environment and exposure to many different departments, like emergency care, pediatrics, or medical-surgical units. This is a fantastic way to see which specialties you might be interested in.
Home Healthcare Services: If you prefer one-on-one care, home healthcare is a great option. You'll work directly with a single patient in their home, providing personalized care and helping them live as independently as possible. This role often offers more flexibility with your schedule.
Higher Education: Your Path to Multi-Certification and a Nursing Career
For many, becoming a CNA in Chicago is the first step toward a higher nursing, Physician Assistant, or Medical degree. Your experience is valuable and can give you a major advantage in nursing, Physician assistant, and medical school applications.
Specialized Certifications: You can also specialize and advance your skills within your current role. Consider certifications in areas like Phlebotomy, EKG Technician, or becoming a Patient Care Technician (PCT). These certifications can make you more competitive and potentially increase your earning potential.
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) / Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN): This is a popular next step. LPN/LVN programs typically take about a year to complete. As an LPN/LVN, you'll have more responsibilities, such as administering medications and managing wound care, under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

With your CNA experience, you have the foundational skills to start your own business. The most common route is to start a home care business.
Start Your Own Home Care Business: You can offer services like personal care, light housekeeping, meal preparation, and companionship directly to clients. This allows you to set your own hours and rates. You'll need to research your state's regulations, get the necessary business licenses and insurance, and create a solid business plan.
Staffing Agency: Another option is to create your own staffing agency that provides CNAs to hospitals or nursing homes to fill short-term shifts. While this requires a more significant investment and more complex management, it can be a very lucrative venture.
